Hello!
Welcome to Shannon Gold Design. Thanks for visiting! I am Shannon Gold and am so excited to have you follow me on my blogging journey. I am a former elementary school teacher, turned stay-at-home mom to three beautiful daughters. We also have a cute little Bichon Frise named Gumbo. I am originally from New Orleans, spent 16 years living in Rye, NY, and settled in the suburbs of Dallas, TX in 2018.
The Decorating Bug!
In 2014, we started renovating our NY home after living in it for 4 years. I was immediately bit by the decorating bug! I especially enjoyed picking out all the finishes from wood flooring and custom wall treatments to paint colors and lighting. Renovating became my passion. My contractor and I worked closely together and he helped make every vision a reality…from built-ins in the basement, to a ship-lapped kitchen ceiling. We even turned a tiny storage closet into a functional bathroom with a shower.
We brightened every space and found unique ways to build in storage. Everything I did in the home was on a very small budget. Each detail added so much character to the builder grade home. We renovated each room, one at a time, over the next 3 years and had a blast doing it. Watching my house and style transform was so neat.
After nearly renovating every space in the home, we were getting to a point that putting any further money into it would not give us a great return on the investment. We were either going to keep renovating and live there forever or stop and possibly sell.
We had been talking for years about moving to Texas to get a change of scenery. I was not a fan of the 9 months of cold and snow each year. Also, the cost of living in New York is insane. The kids were getting older and our window for relocating them was quickly shrinking. So in December 2017, we decided to make the big move. It was bittersweet, but the home sold in 7 days. We made a good bit of money off the sale, thanks to the time spent and investment made on the renovations.
The Big Move
They say everything is bigger in Texas and that is certainly the case with the home we bought. Our new home, in Fairview, TX, is beautiful…a dream…and much more affordable than a bigger home in NY would be. The home was built in 2012 and only needs minor updates. We also need a lot of furniture because almost nothing from our previous home fits well in this one.
Besides furnishings, I’d like to make some more custom updates to some spaces as well. I’d love to add wallpaper and a few custom wall and ceiling treatments. I plan to paint all of the rooms, and replace the bedroom carpets with wood floors. I’ll be applying the same principles as our last home. Doing it all on a small budget, tackling one space at a time. This blog will allow me to share all the rooms in the house as they evolve. I’ll also be sharing ideas and tips for home staging, decorating, and budget friendly finds.
Organizing
In addition to home decor, I have a passion for organizing. I’ve always been an organized person and grew up cleaning and organizing rooms for my family, friends, and neighbors. I started my career as a teacher. My favorite part of that job was decorating my classroom, updating bulletin boards, and designing lesson plans. I was known for having the most clean and organized classroom in the school! Before having kids, I would stay at work late into the night. I would work late organizing my files, perfecting lesson plans, and designing bulletin boards.
Now my time is spent organizing every drawer, cabinet, closet and corner of our house so we never have to go far to find what we are looking for. I believe that every item in the house should have a home and if it does you won’t spend precious time hunting it down when you need it.
The Future
Now that we are settled in Texas and the kids are in school full time, I have some time to explore my areas of interest. I am launching my Personal Organizing and Decor Consulting firm, Shannon Gold Design. If you are local to the DFW area and interested in working with me, please contact me at shannon@shannongolddesign.com for a free consultation in your home. I can help you declutter your life one project at a time. I’ll work to simplify your space and create organizational methods that are maintainable and tailored to your personal needs. I can also help with home decor and staging and will work with you to find your style on a budget.
