Introduction
Today I’m sharing some tips and tricks I’ve learned for how to style a daybed. It has been through lots of trial and error that I have come up with, what I consider, the perfect formula for styling a daybed. We currently have two daybeds in our new house. My oldest and middle children sleep on daybeds. Let me give some perspective as to why I chose daybeds for them.
Background
First of all, the two of them shared a room from the time the 2nd was born. We lived in a tiny, two bedroom condo. The first born went from the crib to a full size bed and when baby #2 climbed out of the crib at 8 months old, she began sleeping in that full size bed with her big sister.
We moved into a bigger home just before baby #3 was born. We needed a guest room at that point since we had so many extended-stay visitors coming to help with the transition to three kiddos. The oldest two girls were used to sharing a room and were more than happy to continue doing so, this time in twin-sized beds.
This arrangement worked well for several years, but eventually, they desired more space. So for my middle daughter’s 6th birthday we moved her to her own “big girl” room. This meant sacrificing the guest room, which we were totally okay with. At this point they were older and were beginning to keep each other up all night, jumping from bed to bed. This is the point when I decided to get her a Daybed. I had found a great deal on FaceBook MarketPlace for a beautiful Restoration Hardware Baby & Child Daybed that I could not pass up.
My oldest got our queen size bed that was in our guest room which we were now turning into the middle child’s new bedroom. They lived happily this way for a few years.
Fast forward to our move to Texas. My oldest requested a Daybed for her new room. Why? Well at this point, she is 12 and realizes Daybeds are perfect for what she wants to do, which is lounge, study, and sleep. Plus the ability to add a trundle for sleepovers is just dreamy in a teens’ eyes. Daybeds are so versatile depending on how you style them! So we chose a more grown-up style daybed for her, basically a Chesterfield Couch style daybed.
The Daybed Challenge
My challenge, however, has been to make the Restoration Hardware Baby and Child Daybed that I love and adore appropriate for a tween girl. My middle daughter just turned 11 and she is expressing that her bed seems babyish. I hope this is a caution to parents who are paying full price to keep that in mind…they grow up so fast! However, I think I’ve figured out how to compromise with her and style her daybed, making it a comfy tween bed just by adding pillows and decor she loves.
Here are my tips for styling a daybed for the tween you love!
How to Style a Daybed
1. Use at least five 22” throw pillows. I stuff these with 24” down inserts. You get a better chop this way.
2. For the throw pillows, choose:
(1) TWO patterned pillows that coordinate with your room colors
(2) TWO solid pillows also in a coordinating color that pair nicely with the two patterned pillows
(3) ONE patterned pillow for the center in a secondary color-way pulled from the colors in the room.
(4) ONE oversized lumbar pillow in front of the five throw pillows. This could be solid or have a pattern.
(5) This tip is optional, but looks cute. Choose ONE smaller lumbar pillow in a different color from the larger one. This one can have a pattern or even a word similar to the one I have here. Amour means love and I couldn’t love this daybed any more.

Looks beautiful! However I wanted to know if you had any tips on how to style a rug in front of the daybed – regarding size and pattern or color.

I came here for this exact question!! I’m trying to decide what size rug to put under my daughter’s daybed in her new “big girl” room.

I am going to use a Texas flag and University if Texas Longhorns theme for my son’s daybed. I bought him one of those zip up comforters in navy blue. (They are awesome) Now I would like to get a variety of pillows, some with the rustic Texas flag and some with burnt orange or UT Logos….any suggestions on how to blend them?

I suggest some solid denim or navy pillows for the back row and some patterned orange ones as well. Then a larger solid navy lumbar and the flag lumbar right smack in the front!

Hi, I am wanting to follow suit for my daughters room. However, she has a black metal day bed. Her rug is actually a lush and whit color. So my question is, since her colors are flipped, do I flip the rest based on yours? For instance where you have the mint, do the blush and where you have the blush do mint? Also, what wall color and furniture paint color (wood and metal) would you say would best represent the mint you have in her room? I love it and you’ve done a wonderful job. I’m just trying to work with what I have.

Where did you get the round shelf?
