The Teen Lounge
The past few months we have been very busy checking things off the to do list. I’m so excited that we have recently finished furnishing another space in our home. I like to call this space the “Teen Lounge” because it was created for my three girls who are quickly growing into teens and tweens.
This room is located on the 2nd level of our home in between two bedrooms. Those are the only rooms on the 2nd level. The space would work well as a playroom or a kids study, but since my kids are growing up and they no longer need a playroom and do most of their homework at the table or the desks in their bedrooms, I decided to create a lounge space for them. I envisioned a place where they could chill with friends and watch their favorite shows, play video games, hangout, and just enjoy a space of their own.
Since the only thing we had in this space was the sofa, end table and TV from our previous home, it took quite a few months to purchase the remaining furniture we needed to complete the space. We have been working on this room since October and today I am finally sharing our completed Transitional Girly Teen Lounge. This room is my new favorite room in the house!
Before Photos
Here is a look at how this room looked when we first walked through the house. The room sat empty with only our couch in it for the last two years.

Transitional Girly Teen Lounge Reveal

The first thing we did was paint the walls the same color that we used in all of the main rooms, Benjamin Moore Horizon (OC-53). It is a very pale gray. Since the ceiling is vaulted and there is no real separation between wall and ceiling, we used the same color for the whole space. We also removed all the carpet on the 2nd level over the summer and put in wood floors, which we stained to match the wood floors downstairs.
Furniture Details
Now that the room was a lot lighter and brighter, I was ready to start choosing furnishings, a new rug, and decor. I had so much fun choosing the furniture for this room and putting everything together.
Modern Sofa Sleeper
We already had the Rochester Sofa Sleeper from West Elm from our previous home’s playroom that had to stay. It is still in excellent shape and we love the modern style and geometric lines. There are many fabric options to choose from for this couch. We went with Chenille Tweed in Frost Gray. It has held up quite nicely the past 4 years. The cushions are machine washable which helps a lot when you have kids!

Zebra Print Rug
I knew I wanted a rug to cozy up the space and I knew I wanted one with interest and pattern. When Boutique Rugs reached out and offered to send me a rug for this space it didn’t take me long to land on the Zebra Print Ecorse Rug. I happen to love animal prints and am not afraid to use them in my designs. Animal prints seem to work with any decor style and virtually any color. They lend a little bit of fun to a space, which is exactly what I wanted for the Teen Lounge. The colors in this rug are not the traditional black and white zebra print, but more muted tones of Light Gray, Beige, Khaki and Black.

Acrylic Coffee Table
I am so happy I chose the Disappearing Coffee Table from Wisteria. I love the modern meets traditional style! The clear acrylic frame and legs paired with a glass top gives the space a light and airy feel.

Blush Velvet Armchair
Sadly the Blush Velvet Armchair is out of stock. I did find a few others that are a similar mid-century modern style. My girls love this chair! It is so soft and the pink color is just beautiful with the zebra rug. The ivory faux fur eyelash pillow looks great on this chair!

Round Side Table
I love the classic clean lines of the side table. The gold-leaf X-legs add a touch of elegance to the space. The round black glass top pairs nicely with the rug.

Blush Velvet Ottomans
The blush pleated velvet ottomans offer a touch of sophistication to the room. They are great for extra seating for family game nights.

Media Cabinet
I fell in love with this media cabinet the second I laid eyes on it. The geometric molding overlay on the front of the cabinet is beautiful. I also love the acrylic hardware with the gold accents. They pair perfectly with the coffee table. The media cabinet holds our gaming equipment and components, as well as bins of legos and other toys.

Console Table
On the empty wall in the corner of the room I placed a small console table. I chose this one because of the modern look and geometric shapes. The octagonal cutouts on the sides add visual interest.

Sofa Table
Finding a sofa table long enough to fill the space behind my couch was quite difficult. All of the sofa tables I found were either way to short or way too expensive for my needs. I found this unfinished solid wood console table on Amazon for a great price! I painted it white and now it works perfectly behind the couch.

Sputnik Sphere Chandelier
I’ve always wanted a Sputnik Sphere Chandelier for a while now, but never had a space that it would look good. I’m so glad I chose it for this space. It brings a splash of modern style. I love that the gold finish brings a touch of glam to the space as well.

Decorative Accessories
I shopped my home for most of the decorative accents and accessories in this room. I love to do that. Moving things around to other spaces keeps your decor feeling fresh and new.

Wall Art and Lamps
I needed something large to fill the empty wall behind the couch. When I saw this large scale wall art at Homegoods, I knew the colors would go perfectly in this space.
The greek key lamps were an impulse purchase. When I saw them, I knew I wanted them, but had no clue where they would go at the time. I’m so glad I found a spot for them. I love how they look behind the couch flanking the art.

Throw Pillows
The throw pillows on the couch add texture and interest to the room. The gray geometric and blush pom pom throw pillow are both from Pier 1. I found the cowhide lumbar on Houzz.

Gallery Wall
This room is immediately at the top of our stairs. I didn’t like seeing the blank wall as I walked up, so I had to figure out a solution. Gallery walls are always an easy way to fill a large space, so I decided to create one. Using black and white photos of my three girls at various ages, I created a grid pattern using twelve 11X14 picture frames. I used acrylic frames which go well with the coffee table, curtain rod and the hardware on the media cabinet. The gallery wall fills out the space nicely and personalizes the room.

Window Treatments
The window already had blinds that came with the house so I just needed to dress the window with drapes. I got a few quotes for custom drapery but it was way out of my budget. I found these super affordable velvet curtains from Half-Priced Drapes on Amazon. They are a creamy ivory color and a nice heavy weight. They are perfect for what I needed for this space. Eventually I’d like to replace the blinds, but they work for now. I used an acrylic rod and modern gold clip rings. The rod came with brackets, but somehow I misplaced one of them. I had to improvise, so I picked up random brackets from Home Depot and spray painted them to match the rings. Sometimes you just have to make things work!

Vintage Style Mirror
I initially bought this glamorous vintage style mirror for our dining room, but I needed something on the space just outside the teen lounge in the hall and this mirror was the perfect size and style. It traditional style complements room’s decor in that modern meets traditional way. I couldn’t love it more and it makes the view from the couch so beautiful!

So there you have it. Our Transitional Girly Teen Lounge is fast becoming our favorite space to hang out. My girls love it and like having a space of their own to relax, play and hangout with friends.
